WINTER IS COMING…but unlike the characters from Game of Thrones, we are looking forward to it! We had the most beautiful Autumn I can remember.  The leaves & fall colors were absolutely spectacular in Big Bear this year.  Soon enough the tempatures will drop and we will be covered in our favorite white stuff!

Big Bear Mountain Resorts have announced their scheduled opening days.  Snow Summit is scheduled to open November 25th (Thanksgiving) and Bear Mountain is slated to open the day after, on November 26th. Get your skis and snowboards waxed and ready becuase it is almost time to ride.

With colder weather on the horizon, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you to winterize your second home.  If you do not live in your Big Bear home full time and it is vacant, winterizing is very important. Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, expand and burst leading to major flooding. But rest easy, winterizing your home is easy. Just follow these three simple steps.

  1. Adjust your thermostat by setting it between 50-55 degrees when you are away from your home.  This can help keep your house warm enough so that the pipes don’t freeze. DO NOT turn your heater off during the winter months.
  2. Shut off your water at the stop and waste. This stops unwanted pressurized water from entering your home.
  3. After the water is off, open all faucets and allow the water to drain from the pipes for a few minutes. We also recommend pouring a bit of biodegradable anti-freeze down the drains and in the toilet (both tank and bowl) just to be extra safe.

This is also a great time to test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors and make sure they are operational.  It only takes a few moments and it can save lives. Remember to stock up on firewood and have those snow shovels handy, because you’re going to need them!
